Roughly fifty vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by police.

Vehicles, exterior walls and mailboxes were defaced, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they announced in a release.

Officers say they were alerted during the night on Wednesday night, when a man noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish substance.

The liquid had been placed in the pattern of a banned symbol, they reported.

Officers then located many other marked cars and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.

Swastikas are banned in Germany under laws banning the public display of Nazi-era symbols.

Police state initial examinations show the substance was likely human bodily fluid.

"There is still no lead as to where it came from; authorities are not yet cognizant of any injuries in relation with the occurrence," they stated.

City officials stated they were attempting "to unravel the mystery" and have requested to the residents for information.

A senior political figure said the vandalism left him speechless and required to be resolved rapidly.

"This event affects the core of Hanau and revives the wounds of the right-wing terrorist attack half a decade ago," he posted on social media, mentioning the death of nine victims by a gunman targeting people of foreign heritage in 2020.
