Each time a major awards ceremony nears, you'll find a demand for the addition fresh award types to honor overlooked contributions and satisfy the passions of followers dedicated to specific genres.
Another commentator has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front because like all dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request is the most urgent and significant. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil in the world of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.
For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications actually cover many game types, making space possible for most games within them.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to put them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.
Recognition Challenges
Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title received no recognition for anything that year
- A different innovative game was excluded in 2019
- Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Only a few puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as the most-played games globally continuing this trend for over a decade.
The legendary block-stacking game challenges popular creative games for the title of most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. One could readily select multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Logic title developers operate at the challenging frontier interactive creation, producing among most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait decades.
